Okay, so she had gone home, whatever, it wasn't like she was going to stay here. She had Traced as soon as she had left the city, making sure she wasn't seen. Now, she was staring up at the castle, her home and her prison, Hellfire Castle.
Should she bother going in? Liir was telling her no, but what could be the harm? The guy was gone now, wasn't he? He had to have moved on when he realized that she wasn't going to marry him, right? Apparently not. As soon as she stepped foot in the foyer, he was upon her, telling her that he had missed her, which above all was weird, and hugging her. She had no idea how he could have missed her, since she barely knew him and she barely had any contact with him at all.
"Um...thank you?" She smiled out of confusion.
"Oh, Queen Nightshade, I have longed for your safe return!" Again, she was flabbergasted. How the Hell could feel like that when he didn't know her? "Come, I have made preparations for our nuptials. I would like your opinion." With a sigh under her breath, she allowed him to lead her away. This was aggravating. Why in the Mother's name had she come back here? Why did she always feel the need to come back here?
The things he showed her were splendid, and better than anything she could have ever come up with, which was really odd that he could peg a woman he had never met before so easily. Was she predictable?
"What do you think?"
"Um... everything is great." She said, bewildered.
"Oh, I'm so glad!" He practically clapped his paws together. Okay, she was getting creeped out. "We will be wed upon the morrow." Like Hell. "Is that all right?" No, it wasn't.
"Uh... sure." She said, not knowing how to argue. He had given her her life back, and she had promised. Curse her inability to go against a promise! Damn it all to Hell! She didn't know this man, she really wasn't overly fond of this man, and yet, she had promised him her life, only because he had freed her from her prison. This royally sucked!
"I..I'm going to go lay down." She said.
"Oh, splendid! I moved all of your things to the North tower, since you destroyed your room before. I figured I would repair the damage there as well, but I wanted to make sure the Queen had a nice place when she returned, and here you are!" Okay... now he was just being annoying. She nodded and made her way out of the throne room, her major irritation in being that he had had a second throne built and placed beside what had been Azazel's. Since it was a bit smaller and less ornate, she was sure that he had made it for her, and she was not going to have that. SHE was Queen here, and he, well, he was no one at the moment. If it weren't for the fact that she had promised, she would have already have had him executed for being so damned annoying. But, a promise was a promise, and she was honor-bound to accept that as fact, even if she didn't want to.
She hated this.. she really did. But, as she stood there with the servants getting ready, she was beginning to change her mind. Not about everything, since the man was still as annoying as Hell, but about the little things.
Her gown was a deep ruby color, with gold trim and hugged her new wolfen hips well. She enjoyed that. In the back of her mind, she still felt uneasy about the whole thing and with good reason, since she still didn't know, or trust this man. There was no one for her to talk to either, except Liir, but that was a little part of herself that she was not going to expose the castle to, just yet. Her sister was dead, her father was dead, her best friend was dead, anyone else was nothing but a casual acquaintance, if nothing else. She was completely, and utterly fucked.
The servants finished with her, securing the veil into her now scarlet hair. She bit her lip until it bled from the pressure.
"M'lady, ye've gone and soiled yer pretty face!" The maid wiped her lip. And Shada knew she was being nice, but she clung to that like a lonely child.
"You think I'm pretty? Be honest."
"Aye, miss. I've never seen a lovelier bride." The woman's face was honest and she liked that.
"Even though I'm not the same as I was?"
"Oh, Miss, yer so silly. Ye were a pretty gal a'fore and ye are now. Please don't fret. This man is a kind, gentle sort. He's not likely a do like his Lordship, May the Devil have his eternal soul." Shada's brows furrowed.
"You know what happened?"
"A'course I do. We all do. One of the chamber maidens saw what he did ta ye." She got a sad look on her face. "And we all know there is something else inside ye. Ye act different when she is in control. We've come ta spot the difference."
"Oh, thank you so much!" Shada embraced the woman, sobbing. "I'm so happy that someone actually believes me about Liir."
"That's an in'tresting name for her. Pretty though. I will spread the news, rest assured."
"Thank you so much, all of you. You can say that as well." Shada wiped her eyes on the back of her lacy black glove.
"Aye, Miss. Now, come, we've gotta get ye downstairs, or I'll get the lash for making you late." The woman, who's name Shada learned was Margaret led her to the ball room where the ceremony would take place. The Coronation of the King would come after that, and her heart just wasn't in it. She just wanted to fast forward and get it over with.
Since the ceremonies had been done and over with, the parties finished and everyone had gone, Shada had retired to her room. Of course, Arnoz had gone with her, with hopes of consummating their union, which Shada was not willingly going to do. She didn't want anything to do with him.
"My darling, Nightshade..."
" Shada." She told him. She tired of him calling her by her first name, but no matter how many times she told him, he still called her that.
"Shada, then. I have something for you." Oh great.. what could it be this time? She rolled her eyes when he turned away from her. "This is for you." He handed her a sealed document, with her family's seal on it.
"What's this?" She asked, confused.
"This came for you earlier this evening." He said, simply. "You were having such a good time, I didn't get a chance to give it to you before now." She slipped a claw under the seal and broke it, unfolding the parchment paper.
"My Darling Nightshade,
"I hope this reaches you in time, but I have a bit of a dilemma. Your step-father, and I say this since you are old enough to have already have met your real father, has been killed and in his place, your eldest brother Jasper had assumed the throne in his stead. I need you to come home. Please darling daughter, I need you to come home, from where ever you happen to be. I am in great danger, as your brother has deemed to accuse me of treason for sleeping with another man and creating you and your sister.
"I know this letter comes as a bit of a shock since it has been centuries since you were born, but my magick, and my pledge to your father has granted me Immortality. Your step father was not mortal, as you well know, and that is why, I hope, and I pray that you are still alive somewhere in the world. I pray that you have not fallen into bad hands and that you are well. If this does not reach you, I fear I am lost. I am lost either way, honestly. Jasper has set my execution for the twenty-first of the Widow, and this date is coming upon me quickly. Please, Nightshade, please, I beg of you. Please come to me before I die, I would like to see my child's face once more before I pass. But be warned, your brother has the country side looking for you. Beware of everyone, or you are to suffer my fate.
With my deepest love, your mother,
Daegonna Ravena Noratannia De Embrell"
Shada stared at the paper, her paws shaking.
"What is it? What's wrong?" Arnoz came over to her, and took her hands.
"My... mother. My mother is going to be executed." She said, the tears in her voice. "My brother is going to kill our mother. I have to go to her, I have to--"
"No... you need to calm down, Shada. You have to calm down and think rationally." He said, steering her to the bed. "When is this supposed to happen?"
"On the twenty first.... which is a week away." She said, tonelessly.
"Oh." Was all he could say. A tear slipped down her cheek. "Please don't cry, it will be all right."
"No, it won't. My mother is all I have left." She said, breaking down. "My mother is the only family I have left, if she dies and I'm not there..." She broke into a sob. "I'll never be able to live with myself!" He was silent for a long time, rubbing her arms.
"Go to her. Go see your mother." He said, after a while. "Go to her and see her one last time." He said. She looked at him, tears in her eyes.
"Really?"
"Yes, she needs you. Go to her, the rest can wait until you get back." She wasn't going to come back, but she wasn't going to tell him that. She rose and began packing her things. She was going to make it look like she had to take the normal way of transit, like any other person. But in fact, as soon as she got out to sea, far away from him, she was going to use her abilities to get home. She was not going to come back here again, unless he was dead and gone. Then and only then was she going to allow herself to come back here. Never, never again. As she had thought, he had offered to take her to the docks, which she accepted, not to seem suspicious. And by the next morning, she was on the boat to Temmora, Tejatica.
Should she bother going in? Liir was telling her no, but what could be the harm? The guy was gone now, wasn't he? He had to have moved on when he realized that she wasn't going to marry him, right?
