They had made it across the border into the next country by nightfall, and where busy setting up camp when there was a strange sound. Instantly Shada was on guard, as well as the actual guards were. Whatever that had been, didn't sound good. It was close, too close. Scenting the air had brought nothing but the scents of animals as well as the beings that were with her. She growled warningly to whatever the origin of the sound was, and it silenced. Good... she didn't want to fight.
She sat down next to Eliza and chatted with her, planning the next course they would have to take.
"The mountains are just ahead of us and it would be easier just to cross them, rather than to go around them. It would shave off several days." Eliza said.
"I agree. It would save a lot of energy and time." Shada nodded. "Don't worry, Eliza, we will find your family's amulet." She really had her doubts about that, but she wasn't going to tell her that. What would it do, crushing the woman's hopes like that? She didn't want to find out. "All right, since we agree, I think I will turn in. We have a lot of walking to do and my feet are killing me." Shada said. She wiggled her big wolfen toes. Eliza laughed.
"As are mine. Please, go and rest yourself. Don't stay up on my account." Shada stood and helped the woman to her feet.
"As you wish, Majesty. Please, have a pleasant night." Shada gave her a bow and headed to her tent which was right next to Eliza's. She laid down on her bed roll and tried to sleep and put everything else out of her mind. They had a long way to go before they got to the place where the amulet was said to be. And she needed her strength. Her eyes drifted closed after a while and she slept.
A while later she was awakened by the sounds of shouting and eerie shrieks. Growling, she hurriedly rushed from her tent, only to see an eight foot spider coming at her. Its eight eyes gleamed red with the glow of the fire, which made it look menacing, more so than it did anyway, being an eight foot spider. It opened its mouth and screamed, the sound trying to blow her eardrums. She growled again.
"I was having a good dream too. Great, looks like this ugly motherfucker wants to ear me." She drew her sword from it's scabbard and raised it. "Come and get me!" She yelled at it. It raised its head, making it seem even larger than it was. It let out an ear piercing screech and ran at her, closing the distance. She went into a crouch, her muscular wolf legs coling beneath her and jumped, landing in the middle of it's back. It screeched again and tried to throw her off, forcing her to plant the blade of Bleeder into the middle of its thorax to hold on.
"Kammina Rothnin severa Jaa!" She said quickly, which froze the creatures legs in place. She ripped Bleeder skyward, cutting through the tough exoskeleton. The creature began to jerk, trying to get her off it's back as well as try to get it's legs free of her spell. She leaped down, rolling when she hit the ground, but was up in an instant.
"Did you really think I was going to let you eat me?" She asked it, shaking her head.
"You are cocky, for being a Lykae bitch." The creature said, its voice sounding like nails on a chalkboard. She grimaced.
"See that's where you're wrong. I'm Xurenae, not Lykae." She said, leaning on the blade. "And you, my eight legged friend, are going to die where you stand."
"You will die before you can raise your blade to me again!" The creature bellowed. It opened it's massive pincher jaws and spit a sticky, yellow stubstance in her direction. It hit the tree beside her tent and hisses, consuming it.
"Oh-ho! You missed!" She laughed, taunting the poor thing, dancing around as it tried to hit her with its toxic spit.
"Stand still! I will get you yet, Lykae bitch... you just wait and see!" It hawked another load of spit at her, grazing her head with it. The hairs sizzled and disappeared; She was sore where it hit.
"All right, enough games." She opened her mouth and took a breath. It was time, and if she could aim it just right, she could scream without killing the people she didn't want to. "Cover your ears and back away!" She shouted. As she watched, all but three of her companions moved away from the fight. Oh well, she had warned them. She clenched her paws into fists and threw her head back, screaming the infamous Baninae Shriek. All over the campsite the spiders exploded, raining gore down on everyone. She screamed until she couldn't breath, at which time she dropped her head and closed her mouth, cutting off the scream.
Trees had bent, the fire had gone out and everyone was staring at her as if she were one of the wonders of the world.
"Lady Nightshade... that was.. you saved us." Eliza said, placing a hand over her heart. "Thank you."
"Not a problem, Majesty. I was just doing as I promised I would do, protect you on this journey." Shada said, smiling and wiping a bit of blood from the Queen's cheek. "I'm happy to have been here to help." They were still staring at her, which was making her uncomfortable, but she endured it, knowing it would have been a matter of time before she would have to show her powers as a Baninae to them. She just hadn't known it was going to be this soon. "We all need to go to sleep, we have a long way to go in the morning." Shada said, turning to go.
"Oh... right. Good night everyone." Eliza shook her head and disappeared into her tent. Shada did likewise, wondering she hadn't made a mistake of showing that particular talent. Eh... oh well. She laid down and it didn't take her long to fall asleep again.
Their journey took them through the woods again, and they weren't even close to the mountains yet. Shada, who usually felt at home in the wood, was uneasy about coming through her. Eliza had tried several times to tell here that nothing was out there, but she just couldn't shake the feeling that they were being watched. And soon, she knew why.
A mile up the path, a strange man appeared, seemingly out of nowhere to attack the head of the group. Her hackles rose and she was instantly in attack mode. He began feeding off of the lead guard, and she allowed him to finish before she dealt with him.
"State your name and your business, Vampire."
"Tch. I don't answer to anyone, Lycan." He smirked at her.
"Oh really? So the fact that I'm not A Lycan means you do." She crossed her arms over her chest, her eyes blackening. "I will have my answers or you will die, it is as simple as that." She detested rudeness just as much as she loathed being snuck up upon, and this fool had done both. He was staring at her.
"Well, Miss Pooch, I don't see how I should have to tell you anything, but you're welcome to try to kill me. I slit you from chin to sternum in six seconds!" Twin blades appeared in his hands, but she wasn't worried about that. He might have been a Vampire, but did he really stand a chance against her, Eliza and the remaining guards? She doubted it.
"Lady Nightshade, wait. Maybe he can help us." Eliza said, coming to her side. His gaze landed on her and locked, a silly smile on his face. She recognized that look, and didn't know why, which pissed her off.
"Or maybe I could water the thirsty earth with his blood." She flexed her claws as if to make her point. The irritating Vampire man smirked at her and she itched to rip it from his face.
"You can try." He said to her before turning back to Eliza. "And yes, I can help you get past the mountain. Up ahead there is are many creatures that would do you harm, and I wouldn't want anything to happen to a beauty such as yourself, or your furry friend." Shada growled at him, but Eliza silenced her.
"Oh, that would be wonderful if you could lead us." Shada looked off into the distance, her irritation still clear on her face. It was obvious that she was not going to win, and since Eliza was sure he could lead them, she let it go. It would get her nowhere if she killed him, at least now.
"If you double cross us, I will make sure you pay for it, threefold, kid." She said, snarling a little.
"Wouldn't dream of it." He gave her a wicked grin, which if she were anyone else, would have made her swoon like a fucking girl. But instead she walked away.
"I don't think she likes me." He told Eliza, loud enough so he knew she would hear. No, she didn't.
"She'll come around." No, she wouldn't. He was a threat and she didn't like it. She just bided her time with him for the moment. She walked in front of the group, where the bigger of the guards were, her senses open.
Her mind kept going back to the man who had come to them, and each time it did, she would get angry. No, he was a threat... and for some reason she felt like he reminded her or someone she used to know. She couldn't place the person though, and that was making her more irritable. She just wanted to kill him and get it over with.
"Lady Nightshade?" Eliza called to her." She turned her head briefly, studying the woman.
"Aye?"
"Could you come here please?"
"Aye, Eliza." She said, turning and sidling up to her. "What is it?"
"I would like you and Alistor here to take first watch tonight. You two seem to have the highest senses in the group and I don't want another episode like last night to happen again."
"As you wish." Shada was livid, and the man, Alistor seemed to smirk at her again. Oh, this was going to be a long night, she knew it. She just had no idea how long.
She sat down on a nearby fallen log, her green eyes glowing a bit. Oh, she was right, this was going to be excruciating. The worst part was, he was driving her nuts.
"So, if you aren't a Lycan, what are you?" He asked, throwing one of his daggers into the air and catching it by the blade. She grit her teeth.
"I'm a Xurenae. I was once a Vampiir, but I am not cursed to live out my days in this accursed form." She said, not looking at him. "What else do you want to know?" She knew she was asking for trouble by asking this, but why the Hell not? She was already stuck with him until the change, but that wasn't until three in the morning. It was barely eleven now.
"Touchy touchy." He said. "I was just curious, there is no reason to snap at me. So... why do you hate me so much? What did I ever do to you?" She gave an exasperated sigh.
"If I answer this question, will you leave me alone?"
"Yes, if you answer it." He said, looking at her.
"Because. You appear out of nowhere and you bit one of the guards. You did not announce yourself and I don't trust anyone, Not anymore." She stood up and began to pace, her tail skimming the dirt. "That's why." She said. He gave a low whistle.
"Fair enough." He told her. She glanced at him briefly before starting to walk the distance around the camp.
"Just keep your eyes and other senses open." She said, walking away from him. She knew he was watching her go, she could feel his eyes boring into her. Whatever, she had better things to do.
Liir stirred to life inside her.
"Mmmm... fresh meat, I see. Oh, look at him!" She gave a wolf whistle. "Wait... I see... oh. Oh no."
"What? What is it?" Shada whispered to her. "What's wrong?"
"There's something... evil inside him, Shada. I don't know what it is... but it makes me feel uncomfortable. You have to stay away from him. Promise me you'll stay far away from him." Shada thought that was weird, but she agreed. Wouldn't be too hard, she already didn't like him.
"Lady Nightshade, might I have a word with you?" Eliza called her from her thoughts.
"Of course, Lady Eliza. What can I do for you?" She asked, coming up to her.
"Well... I noticed you don't seem to like our guide, Alistor. I just wanted to ask you to please be nice to him. I know he can be sort of...overwhelming, but... please, just try to get along." Shada sighed.
"I can try. I'm not going to guarantee that it's going to happen right away, but I will try, for you at least." She said.
"Thank you."
"Aye." She rubbed a hand over her face and went back to patrol. Eh... she didn't want to have to deal with him... this wasn't fair.
They were on the road for a week, and with each passing day, Shada tried to accept Alistor more and more. She didn't particularly want to, but she had to, per Eliza's request. He didn't make it easy on her though. In fact, he seemed to try to get her to snap at him everyday. She ignored him for the most part, but it got increasingly harder and harder and harder. Just when she had reached her breaking point, they had come to a house. It was a strange little house made of logs, but it stood high amongst the trees.
"Should we go inside?" Eliza asked.
"I don't know. I mean, it would be nice to rest..." As Shada spoke, the door of the house opened and a woman exited.
"Oh! I have visitors! Come in! Come in! Don't be shy..." The woman flung the door wide and ushered them through. Reluctantly, Shada followed Eliza into the stranger's house. Somehow everyone was able to fit into the house, which was a surprise since it was so small. Shada stayed near Eliza the whole time, making sure that she was well protected. Alistor stood beside her, but she grit her teeth and ignored him.
"What are all of you doing out this far, anyway?" The woman asked. Shada didn't sense anything wrong with her, so she briefly nodded to Eliza.
"We're searching for something of my family's." Eliza said, not giving away too much.
"Oh, that is a noble conquest." The woman said, smiling and nodding. Alistor had a peculiar look on his face, which was starting to bother her. His red eyes were shining and his fangs were out.
"Don'T. You. Dare." Shada growled at him under her breath. He seemed not to hear and took a step toward the woman. She allowed him to that a few more steps before she intervened, snatching him by his collar and using a rope she had taken from one of the guards to tie him up. With that done, she dragged him outside and threw him in the dirt. "What the FUCK was that?"
"Fuck you..." He said, breathing heavily. "Why did you stop me from feeding?"
"Because, you idiot, you can't feed from someone we are trying to get information from, duh!" Shada said, kneeling beside him, staring down into his eyes. "If you wanted to feed, you should have excused yourself and asked someone. Gods, you're so fucking dumb!" She wanted to kill him.
"You know... you're attractive when your angry." He grinned at her, she merely sighed and got up. "This is where you're going to stay until we see fit to release you."
"Ooh, kinky."
"Bite me, asshole."
"You'd enjoy it wouldn't you, babe?" She punted him in the ribs.
"Shut up, you cretin." She growled and walked back into the house, slamming the door as she did so. She was so done with him.
A little later, Eliza went out and released Alistor from his bonds. She hadn't known why Shada had done this to him, but it had to be a good reason. She knew the woman well enough to know that about her. The woman had shown them a book with strange markings on it, and instantly Alistor's eyes had grown wide.
"That's my father's book!" He exclaimed.
"Is it? It was given to me by... I don't exactly know, to be honest. I believe it was an uncle of mine. Perhaps a friend. It was found among the ruins of a recently decimated building."
"It was my father's, I have it's sibling at home." He held out his hands. "May I?"
"By all means. You can have it, actually. I can't seem to read it." Shada glanced at the book with little more than boredom. It was an old book, she could smell the inks and the dust from where she was sitting.
"So it was what, your father's diary... his black book, what?" She asked, yawning.
"Spell book. My father's spell book." She cracked one eye and looked up at him.
"Mm. Good for him."
"Miss... who did you say gave you this book?"
"My... uncle, yes, it was an uncle. His name was Jeremiah, why?"
"I need to know who had contact with Rayflo Amoro..." She opened her other eye then, attentive.
"You're Rayflo Amoro's kid?" She asked, frowning. He didn't look at her, but he nodded.
"He's my father and my Sire." He said. Oh, so that was why he reminded her of someone she knew... fucking Rayflo Amoro... Oh Gods...
"Mmm. So what's the old bastard been up to these days?"
"He's dead." Alistor said flatly, turning his red eyes to her.
"Dead? Well now. That is interesting. So what killed him, a massive group of angry women?" She smirked.
"No. He didn't." Alistor snapped. "Just shut up."
"Ooh, touchy." She stood up and stretched. "Whatever though, he probably got what he deserved. I met him long before you were born, fledgling." She yawned. "We were in the war together." She cracked her jaw. "Tch, he was scum anyway." He ignored her last comment.
"You were in the war together?"
"No, I made it up. Geez, Aye, he and I were in the war together. Why?"
"He never mentioned you. In fact.... I think I'm kinda glad. You and he probably had many a good time." He looked her over with a slightly disgusted look on his face.
"I know you don't think that I.... Alistor, if you want to keep that face, I would suggest you stop looking at me like that. No, I was never with him. Gods, do I look like I would stoop to that level?" She grimaced. "He and I didn't get along anyway."
"I see." He was giving her a different look now, one that was just as demeaning.
"Alistor, I swear to the Gods..."
"Look, my father had two books, he kept one and gave one to a close friend of his for safe keeping. So if you know anything..."
"I don't know shit about it. I..let's just say he and I weren't the best of friends. I respected him as a warrior, but as a man, he was as vile as they come." He frowned at her, but turned back to the woman.
"Thank you." She nodded at him and he left the house to go and look over the book. She rolled her eyes and got engrossed in what the woman saying to Eliza.
She sat down next to Eliza and chatted with her, planning the next course they would have to take.

"Don'T.
