The heavy iron gates stood before her, their elegant twists and bends beautiful and yet, not at the same time. The sign on the side of the short stone walls that held the gates in place had a plaque that read SunnyVale Asylum, 1245. She bit her lip, still contemplating going in and admitting herself, but at the same time, she wasn't sure if this was going to help her. She had a lot of things wrong, that had happened a long time ago. Most of which were too painful to even think about, much less anything else. She sighed and looked at the looming, three story monstrosity of the building; it seemed to stretch on forever. Barred windows showed on the side.
"Promising." She said dryly, pushing open the gates and walking up the long driveway toward the door.
The building was far larger up close, which only made her want to check herself in all the more. This place was going to her with the traumas, this place was going to help her with the nightmares, and with coming to terms with Pandora's death. And all she wanted to do was forget. To get beyond everything bad that had happened in the past. It wouldn't be easy, with the way her Vampiric mind worked and yet, she was willing to try everything and anything to go over it, to move on with her life.
With one last breath of fresh air, she opened the door and went inside.
She walked up to the front desk and rang the bell.
"May I help you?" A short, blond woman came from down the hallway, wearing a nurse's uniform.
"Uh, yes. My name is Nightshade Antoinette Angheliiratiaa Kavihaa De Embrell, and I would like to check myself in." She began.
"Is that so?" The name on the woman's name tag read Sophie, she noticed. "Why?"
"I was a soldier in the war...."
"Ah, trauma and stress. Damn those abominations!" Sophie obviously didn't realize she was speaking to one of the very people she had called an abomination. "They don't deserve to live on this earth alongside us Humans!" Keeping her rising ire down, Shada nodded gravely. The woman reached into a drawer behind the desk and came up with a clipboard with a pile of papers attached.
"Fill these out and I will see where we can put you."
"Aye..." Shada took the paperwork and the pen Sophie handed her before turning to sit in one of the white painted, hard, plastic chairs.
The documents were pretty cut and dry, asking simple questions. Though there were a lot of papers, it didn't take her long.
"Well, that was quick!" Sophie smiled as she took Shada's paperwork.
"What can I say? I'm a fast reader."
"A good talent, I suppose. Makes my job easier." She placed the papers in a wire bin and motioned her around the counter. Shada went to her and the two walked down the hall.
Sophie showed her to the decontamination room, where she was shaved bald, scoured with what felt like glass and salt, all before given a very drab, plain but simple white hospital gown. She felt awkward since her tattoos, the few she had on her neck, wrist and shoulders stood out against her caramel colored skin. But that was not as bad as the fact that she was bald, for the moment. Her hair would take a mere few days, if she had a good supply of blood, around a month, if she didn't to grow back. She had never been bald before, and she didn't like it.
"Her name is Nightshade De Embrell, approximately five foot, ten inches tall. Various tattoos. Black hair, green eyes." Sophie spoke into the little tape recorder she had fished from her pocket a few seconds ago. Shada felt like a science experiment, or something since she was being treated like one. She didn't move, she didn't blink. She just let the humiliation continue until it was over. For some reason, she couldn't help but feel uneasy, as if this place had some secret, a dirty one to be sure, but a secret nonetheless, and she was about to find out what it was, even if she didn't like it, which she was sure she would not.
And she was right. After Sophie was finished with her, she handed her over to two orderlies, who grabbed her and took her to a cell-like room where they locked her in. The room was almost blindingly white, with a barred, dirty window, that let very little light it and made the room seem dingy and dirty. And perhaps it was. When she sat down on the bed, dust rose up to make her sneeze. Not really, she forced herself to sneeze, just in case anyone was watching her. She didn't want to find out what they would do to her if they found out she wasn't a Human.
Overall, she was beginning to regret doing this to herself. True, she was having a hard time things lately, but with time she would have been able to work through them on her own. She really didn't need to be here.
"Seriously, you made a big mistake by doing this. I can sense the unrest here, and I know you do too. We probably should have talked about this a little bit instead of you just making a decision."
"I know, Liir, I know. And I have this bad feeling...."
"I know you do, I do too. And some one is coming.... Shit! I think they heard us talking to each other... this is going to be bad, I just know it!" Sure enough, as soon as Liir fell silent, the door opened and a doctor came in.
"Hello, Miss De Embrell, how are you today?" The doctor asked, holding out a milky white hand to her.
"Very well... for now, I think." She said, hiding her fear behind a small smile, taking his hand.
"I see. Well, let's have a look at you. We need a full physical for your file. It's all routine. We ask this of all of our new patients." His smile wasn't as reassuring as she had hoped it would be but she didn't mention her discomfort. Instead, she nodded and sighed.
"All right, what do I have to do?" She asked, shifting uncomfortably on the narrow bed.
"All you need to do is sit back and let the nurses have a look at you. Then I will come back in and we will talk again." She nodded. "Good, then. I will see you in an hour or so." He shook her hand again and left the room. Two nurses came in just after he left to begin her examination.
And after about two hours of being pinched, prodded and stuck with different instruments, the nurses disappeared and she was left alone for a while. She was afraid that they were going to find out what she was by her blood test or something. Her eyes turned a pale yellow and she bit her lower lip. She was going to talk to Liir again, but she didn't want to risk it.
The doctor came back in a few minutes later, dragging a rolling chair with him. He placed the chair in front of the bed and sat down, and opened her files. He was looking at her peculiarly, as if he were trying to figure her out.
"I have your test results in this folder. And I have to tell you, these are some of the most strange results I have ever seen. Especially your blood." He began, looking down at the papers. "You have some of the most interesting blood I have ever seen. And you don't even have a blood type. I'm utterly baffled by your results." He scrubbed his hand over his mouth, eye brows raised. "And all of your other tests either show you as being healthy, or being dead. Again.. baffling."
She sat there, fear in her eyes, which had thankfully gone back to green, and stared at him.
"Which do you believe I am?" She asked, cocking her head a bit.
"To be honest, I know exactly what you are. And what surprises me the most is why you are here." He leaned back in his chair and crossed his arms over his chest. She was stunned.
"You know what I am? How?"
"My sister is also like you. She was killed not to far from here about twenty years ago." He said, tight-lipped. "She was a monster." She fought the urge to strike him from his chair then.
"She was no more a monster than you yourself." She said, keeping calm somehow. "And you are doing nothing but shaming yourself speaking about her like this."
"No, she was a monster. She tried to kill us all, and only stopped because of the crucifix fixed to the door frame of our sitting room." He said. Her eyes narrowed and turned a bright gold.
"I have to tell you, I would have believed you until you told me that she stopped because of a religious icon. That is a myth." His eyes hardened.
"You dare to speak to me like that, scum?"
"Scum? Sir, The Mortals signed a treaty with the Immortals, and we are equals... well, you are the inferior species, not me." She stood up, towering over him as he sat him his chair. "And it would be wise to watch your tone with me. I have a strong distaste for ignorance. And you are encroaching the line."
He rose to meet her face to face, his cold gray, listless eyes met her golden ones.
"You would do well not to try to intimidate me, Miss De Embrell. I am in charge of you in this wing. I would hate for you to get harmed." His mouth stretched into a wicked, hate filled smile. She bared her fangs at him, just as her eyes turned black.
"And you would do well not to try and threaten me. I may be here, but that doesn't mean I can't break free. And should that time come, I would watch your back. I will not likely be merciful with my judgment." The door burst open and two Orderlies came in to stand at the Doctor's side.
"Dr. Koffman, are you all right?"
"This patient has tried to attack me, see to it that she is restrained." He gave her one last smirk and turned to go. "Oh, and boys? Make sure you tighten the straps good. Wouldn't want her to get loose." He laughed at her before he left, his orders dictated. She hissed at the men and charged toward the doctor. For some reason, she couldn't seem to break their hold, and she was, by far, the strongest of them in the room, despite her form. Her Vampirism should have allowed her to escape them and kill the smug little bastard, but that wasn't the case. She fought the two big men, but to no avail. She seemed to get weaker and weaker.... what the Hell? What had the man done to her? She had absolutely... his hand shake! Had he put something on his hands, some sort of slow acting sleep aid or something? Why did she suddenly feel hot?
"Promising." She said dryly, pushing open the gates and walking up the long driveway toward the door.
The building was far larger up close, which only made her want to check herself in all the more. This place was going to her with the traumas, this place was going to help her with the nightmares, and with coming to terms with Pandora's death. And all she wanted to do was forget.
