It was apparent Lief was hurt, there were no physical signs, but he acted as if Shada had stabbed him or something. As a result, all of the women, Miranda included, were against her. It hurt to know that no one believed her, even when she was sure that the same had probably happened to them as well when he Turned them. It wasn't fair that she was an outcast because she refused to fall for Lief like the others had. He had taken her virginity, he had taken her life and she was supposed to be grateful? She was more upset that they wanted her to conform to him, like they had, when he had done her so wrongly.
And she hated him more than she had before. He had done nothing but trick her, essentially rape her, and kill her. He was nothing but a monster and she should have known better than to fall for it.
Around two centuries later, Azazel was back, and like before Shada's heart was telling her something different than her head. In her heart, she wanted to get to know him, she wanted to be with him... if he could get her the Hell out of this place. Even after this long, nothing had changed. She was still hated by everyone and she was tired of it.
"Nightshade." His Minnan accept rolled over her like silk. She shivered and looked up from her book, seeing him as he approached her. He intrigued her, almost to the point she was afraid of him, afraid to be alone with him. And perhaps with good reason, because of what Lief had done to her.
"Aye?" She asked, raising her eyebrows.
"You are to come with me."
"What? Come with you? Where are we going?"
"Lief told me you were to come with me. He doesn't seem to want you here anymore. He said he was afraid you were going to attack him again." Azazel gave her an amused look. "You must have done some real damage if he feels like that. Then again, that also could be Lief being over dramatic, like he is sometimes." Azazel laughed. "Besides, he told me he Turned you, and asked you to be his, like he does with all of them. You seem to be the only one not taken in by his ways. Means you're smarter than they are." She smiled at him and closed the book.
"Thanks, Zal." She said, using the nickname he had told her to use with him. Her eyes were still a sea foam green with pain, knowing she would have to leave her friend... well, former friend behind. "So where are we going? Leii? Tornna?" She asked, referring to cities around Temmora.
"No. I live overseas, in Blade." Her eyes went wide.
"In Blade?" She was floored. She had never ventured out of Tejatica, and this was way farther than she wanted to go! "You want me to.... I can't! I just can't!" She didn't want to move that far away! Her friends were here, those that didn't hate her, or think her dead.....by the by she would be utterly alone again.
"You have no other choice. Lief will kill you if you stay here." His tone was sympathetic, but she was coming around to the idea anyway, since her earlier thoughts had made sense. She should have listened to Liir, who had been trying to tell her not to go, trying to convince her that this was a bad idea, but she didn't listen and she would come to regret that decision.
She did go overseas to Blade with him, and the whole time they were ship bound, she got to know Azazel a bit better. She learned that he was a man of many talents, most of them having to do with the dying or dead. It was a bit unnerving having to be so close to him all the time, but he scarcely allowed her to leave the cabin. He hadn't been cruel about it, he had warned her that as a Baninae, she could capture with her voice, as well as her pretty face, and to allow them safe voyage, that had to remain below deck. He had also told her that she was now a distant kin to the Sirens, the beautiful women who lured sailors to their deaths with their voices, and the Banshees, who killed with theirs. That was something Lief had hinted upon, but had never told her. She was strangely attracted to him... for absolutely no reason. He was not anything like she was attracted to, not even by a long stretch and yet, the more time she spent with him, the more she realized that he was the only person who had ever taken the time out to listen to her.
She told him about her family growing up, and of her twin sister, as well as her father. He took it all in stride, telling her that she would never have to go back to her childhood home, unless she wanted to, for some unknown reason. And that she would never have to go back to Lief and the Harpies, not after the injustices she had suffered. She had been happy to hear all of that from him, even if the relationship she now had with him was unclear. With Lief, she had been nothing more than a part of his harem, but she suspected Zal had more to him that than. And she doubted that she would be a part of a harem, judging by the fact that he had bought her more clothing than she would ever need, and everything had been what she had wanted to wear, not what he wanted her to wear. She had a feeling she was going to be in better hands with Zal than Lief would ever know and that gave her some comfort.
They were almost to Dalvalkrinne, a port city near his home, Zal had told her, when she had awakened at dusk. He told her to get dressed and to come up on deck, the first time she had been on deck since they had come aboard the ship. When she did as he had asked, he showed her the skyline of the coming city, the way the lights sparkled in the distance. It was a beautiful sight, it really was. Her eyes glittered with wonder, seeing the moon as the clouds streaked over it, hiding part of it from view. The starry sky... the way the ancient stars glimmered. Ah, she had never known nature to look so beautiful.
"Shada..." His voice startled her from her daydreaming. "There's something I want to ask you." He told her, turning her to face him and taking her hand. She searched his face, eyebrows knit in confusion. The wind had blown some of his usually tidy black hair from its ribbon to lay against his shoulders and around his face.
"You do?" She asked. What was he doing? Why was he....Oh Goddess... he wasn't... He got down on one knee and looked up her, eyes full of something she was too afraid to admit that she could see there and smiled.
"I know you and I have been friends for a long time, Shada, and I know that Lief Turned you so that you would be honor bound to him, but I can't help myself. You are a beautiful woman, and you have shown that you are capable of making your own decision, of choosing what you want and don't want for yourself. So I ask you...Will you be my wife?" She stared at him for perhaps too long, since his eyes which had been bright, were beginning to dull, fearing that she was going to say no. And by rights, she probably should have listened to Liir, but again, she wanted what she wanted.
"Yes." She said, smiling at him. His eyes instantly regained their former luster and he rose to embrace her, swinging her around. He was a good foot taller than she was, so her legs barely brushed the ground when he did so.
"Oh Shada, you have made me the happiest man!" She buried her face in his chest and smiled. Perhaps she had... but why did she had this overwhelming sense of dread wearing down on her? She ignored it, allowing Zal to place his ring on her finger and kiss her. She was bothered by her own train of thought, but never let it show to him so she wouldn't let him down. This was a happy occasion, and she was not going to let some strange, errant thought bring her down.
They were married shortly after they disembarked in Dalvalkrinne and she became Mrs..... whatever his surname was. She had been listening for it.. but it seemed like it had never come, and that bothered her. Instead of dwelling on that, she merely kept her maiden name and followed her new husband up the aisle and out into the town.
Their marriage was a long a fruitful one, in which time they had experienced many things together, including the expansion of their Coven. Zal had had a small one before they had come back, but with her arrival, initiates seemed to pile in by the droves, mostly to see their new leader. At first she was flattered by the show of support she was getting from the town and the people in it, but as time wore on and she realized she was becoming nothing more than a perk, she knew it had to stop. She stepped down and did nothing but help him behind the scenes. And things seemed to go back to normal.
In town she was known as the Siren, an ironic nickname, but an endearing one, all the same. She was finally living a happy life, with a loving husband and people who didn't hate her. And for once, she had no fear of being attacked in the night. It helped a lot that she didn't sleep alone, but even with that, however, she still had horrendous nightmares that had her screaming so loud she woke the entire building. Zal was always there, shushing her and telling her it was just a nightmare.
But with all that, she still had the soul-crushing sensation of being utterly alone. Surrounded by people, she was still alone, and there was nothing she could do to stop it. Perhaps she shouldn't have looked down on Lief for wanting her company, even if he been wrong in asking her to be with him as he had. She bit her lip and rubbed her pregnant belly absently as she walked down the long hall toward her room. Only three centuries after they had been married had she gotten pregnant, which was a surprise to her, since she was an undead, and all of her organs had shut down when she died. She was sure of it. Only after Zal had told her what he was, and how this was possible, had it made sense. He was able to procreate, even with someone like her. A miracle, to be sure.
She bore him a daughter, whom they named Pandora. She was happy, seeing the little girl, her first child as she laid in her arms and realized that her empty feeling had disappeared. This... this was what she was missing. She hadn't known it until the moment she saw the girl for the first time, but it was true. And she doted on the girl constantly, making sure that she always had what she needed. That was what one did with their first child, act as if they were a porcelain doll, that would break at anytime.
The girl grew up fast, despite her Vampiir mother, which meant she was the happy medium between her parents, and in a short period of time, no less than about six hundred years, she appeared to be a teenage girl. And Azazel went on with his life, watching over his daughter. Shada didn't like how the man operated around the girl, but she never found anything to point toward an unnatural relationship, which worried her. It was one thing for the girl's mother to want to know all about her habits, but Azazel... he was just creepy about it. And it seemed to get worse as time went on. But since she couldn't prove it, and Pandora had said nothing to indicate it, she could do nothing, and it ate at her.
Liir was bored, utterly bored and tired of being dormant inside Shada, and for once the woman had consented to her having control over their body. That was a rare occasion, if ever, and so the Succubus was enjoying herself.
Usually she would have changed their body, taking her own form over Shada's but she hadn't bothered to, other than her horns, which were large, black and curled over the back of her head. Other than that, she was Shada. This particular day, however, she had found a person of interest, at least by her standards, which were numerous and complicated... and perhaps a bit hypocritical, but that wasn't the point. She had found a two-fer; someone to feed from as well as do wicked things to, and she planned to do both!
The good part was that the man was a willing, and since he knew little of Shada, and cared just as little, which she had found out by delving into his mind for a quick second, this was perfect. No, more than perfect. She gave him the sultriest look she could muster in this form and sashayed away, watching his aura for movement. Hooked, the man lumbered after her, and all she did was grin to herself and go find a perfect place to decimate her new toy. First, she would suck his emotions and after.. well, after was when she would have her fun.
There was a flaw in her plan, and his name was Azazel. He had been coming from somewhere to her left, and had seen the whole thing. Unfortunately, Shada had neglected to tell him about Liir, so when he saw Liir, he mistook her for her soul sister, and rage consumed him. He hadn't even noticed that she had had large black horns or anything.
Something in his mind seemed to snap, which didn't help his mood, because as he pursued her, it got worse and worse and worse. He had only meant to pull her away from the man, to take her back to their room and yell at her, but when he got there and saw her on her knees... He blacked out. All he remembered was coming upon them, seeing her and then... nothing. The next thing he knew, Shada was screaming at him to stop, there was blood everywhere and the man was dead. Apparently he had killed him.... and he remembered nothing.
"What have you done?" He asked, voice tight, as if he was going to cry or something.
"I didn't do anything! Why did you kill this man, what wrong has he done you?" She was furious at HIM! How could she be the one upset when he had just caught her with another?
"He was defiling my wife, that's the wrong he caused me!" He shot back. She stopped and visibly blanched.
"He de... no. Azazel, that wasn't me!"
"Wasn't it? I just saw you performing acts that I can't even get you to do for me! How the Hell wasn't it you?" He was growing furious again, the dangerous fury from before, and he feared what he would do next.
"I never told you this because I knew it was too crazy for you to believe, but I have a second soul. Her name is Liir and she is a Succubus. You didn't see me doing anything!" She yelled at him. He had to stop, had to back away, before he hurt her. Before he... Succubus? She was a.....No. He couldn't have heard that right, he couldn't have.... "Azazel, it wasn't me! What are you doing! What are you--!" He blinked and he realized he was choking her. She had a black eye and a bloody lip... and he was choking her. Her face was turning red, her eyes were bulging in their sockets. His lips parted for a moment, like he was going to say something, perhaps to apologize to her, but he didn't. He shut it again with a snap, turned on his heel and hurriedly rushed away from her, before he did something else to her. He couldn't understand why he would do that to her... why she had just told him what she had. She had a second soul? A body was born with only one soul, not two. And she had been a Mortal, which meant she had just lied to him.
All of this was just rushing through his mind, making him furious all over again. He was going to make her pay for this, if that was the last thing he did.
He found her in their room, crying and trying to clean her split lip. It was closing as she was doing so, but since she had been Mortal, she probably had thought to clear the infection out, of which was not there. He closed the door hard enough to have it bang open again on the frame, which made her jump and look at him. Her eye was beginning to swell, but would go away soon because of her Vampirism and red from crying, the bloody tear tracks marring her face.
"Come here, woman." He commanded. She gave him a foul look and went back to doing what she was doing. "I said come here, woman. You will come when I call you." He snapped. With a heavy sigh, she did as he asked and went over to him. "Get on your knees." Her eyes were glowing blackly and she glared at him.
"No. You will not command me, Azazel. I am not a slave." He took her arm in one hand and forced her to her knees, a wicked glint in his green eyes.
"You will do as I tell you, or I will make you do it." He forced her to give him oral sex, hitting her each time she fought him, or bit him, which she did a few times, trying to get away from him. And when he was satisfied with that, he forced himself upon her until he was spent before beating her until she couldn't walk.
When he left, she was still writhing on the ground, covered in his seed and cursing his name as loudly as she could. He had half a mind to go back in there and teach her a lesson about that, but he had better things to do than that. And she, for all her beauty, was not worth his time.
He had been steadily beating her every day and night since he had seen Liir with the random man she had thought to feed and fuck. And she was sick of it. She couldn't bear to sleep in the same room as him, which he had forced her into staying in, despite her fighting back. And she loathed everyday just as much as she had when she still lived in the Castle with her family. Something had to change. If not, she was going to do everything in her power to make sure she and Pandora would leave and never come back. Azazel would never find them to hurt them again.
Pandora still hadn't told her if her father had done anything sexual to her, and for the most part, she had believed her, but she was pretty sure that the sadistic bastard had probably beat her just like he was doing to her mother, bruises covering her arms had confirmed that, and it was then Shada knew that if they didn't get out, he was going to kill them, or at least find some way to kill them. She couldn't have that, not for Pandora. If there was one thing that made her stomach churn more than a parent beating a child, was the fact that she hadn't known and that was a problem. But since she knew now, they had to get out. And fast, before the lunatic found a new reason to beat her.
He didn't believe her when she told him about Liir, just as she had predicted, but he was taking his hatred a bit too far. She could have understood if he was angry for a few days, but this had been years ago, almost fifty the last time she had counted and he was still acting as if it had just happened yesterday. Luckily Shada had not left Liir in charge of their body since then, nor had the Succubus had asked either. It was as if she felt responsible for what was happening, as well she should, since it was her fault in the bloody first place! Still, with everything going on, she didn't know why she hadn't just taken responsibility for her actions and shown Azazel her true self? Possibly because he was a deranged asshole, who would not have believed even what his eyes told him, which made perfect sense.
She had been watching the messages that had come in and out of the Coven house and found one addressed to Azazel talking about the fight the Mortals were ensuing against the Immortals. And the army requested all Immortals to join them. Seeing this as the perfect opportunity, she went to Pandora's room.
She found the girl in the shower... well, she heard the shower running and assumed the girl was there.
"Pandora, I want to talk to you, if you aren't busy." Shada called over the running water.
"Oh, hey mom. You can come in, I'm decent. I'm just giving little Fortuna a bath."
"Fortuna? Your wolf pup?"
"Aye. She was filthy from running in the meadows with me." Pandora grinned, looking very much like her mother in doing so. Shada returned the smile and leaned against the counter.
"I wanted to talk to you, without your father hearing us because I want you and I to leave. I know he had been putting his hands on you, and I am not going to let him do it anymore."
"Aye...." The girl's hair shaded her eyes for a moment, and Shada saw her lower lip tremble. "But he has been hitting you as well, he told me so." She sighed and knelt beside the girl.
"Aye, but I would rather him hit me than you." Shada replied. "Neither of us deserve it, but if it had to be one of us, I would rather it be me." She pressed a kiss to her daughter's forehead before clearing her throat and speaking softly enough for the girl to hear her. "I just got word that the Mortals are fighting against the Immortals and the Immortal side needs all available people to help. I figure fighting the Mortals would help to relieve stress for us, and it would be perfect cover for us. Your father would never think to look there, since I'm a pacifist by nature." She whispered. The girl nodded before turning blue eyes to her mother.
"I agree, and I don't care if we fight or not, I just don't want to be here anymore. I can't take it anymore." The pup yelped because of the girl's grip on her, which made them both jump and look at her, expecting the worst.
"All right, then we will go at dawn. We will have to stick to the shadows because of our Vampirism, but for the most part, we will be able to go then. Your father sleeps like the dead. What I need for you to do is to fight sleep and wait for me. We will meet by the old oak tree at the bottom of the hill. You know the one."
"Aye, mama." She nodded. "I will meet you there and then we will go." Shada held her daughter, the pup forgotten for the moment. "I love you, Mama."
"I love you too, Pandora." Shada released the girl and helped her finish washing the pup before she left to make other preparations for their journey. They had to get to the docks by noon and take the Devil's Conquest to the States. It was going to be a long journey, but she was sure that as soon as they made it to the battlefields, things would improve.
And she hated him more than she had before. He had done nothing but trick her, essentially rape her, and kill her. He was nothing but a monster and she should have known better than to fall for it.
