Miranda and Shada stood in front of the ancient church, staring.
"Scared?" Nightshade asked, smirking.
"Of course not." Rani said, trembling a little. "You?"
"Not even a little." Shada replied, smiling. She wasn't either. She was a Witch, after all. "Come on, let's go inside." She opened the front door and turned to look at her friend. "Smells like a whole lot of dust in there."
The red head laughed and went to see for herself.
"Yea, you're right." The two of them entered the old building, walking quietly through the foyer. Everything was dirty or broken, including the windows.
"Why are you here?" A voice called from the far end of the foyer. Both girls jumped and looked around, confused. "Come into out sanctuary. We would like to see the two girls that came here."
They found the door to the sanctuary and entered only to see a room full of women.
This was it, this was their last chance to turn back. But no, the two girls walked into the room.
"Come to the dais." The voice, coming from the lone man in the room, beckoned them.
Shada took the first tentative step and before too long, the two stood in front of an extremely beautiful man. Both of their jaws dropped.
"I am Lief Zombardi. What brings the two of you here?" His voice was gentle, belying the fact that he was very, very deadly.
"We would like to join you." Shada said, her green eyes glowing a bit. Rani merely nodded beside her, mouth still open and gawking.
"Would you now?" He seemed amused. "Just who are you? What are your names?" He stood up and began to circle them, taking them in from all sides. His nearness itself was enough to set their blood boiling in their bodies.
"My name is Nightshade Antoinette Angheliiratiaa Kavihaa De Embrell." Shada said, saying the full name her mother had told her to use. She was never sure why she had to do it, other than because her mother had told her to.
"And I am Miranda Vi Luete." Rani babbled. Shada didn't know why she was acting so strangely, since Miranda was gay, and had always said she didn't like men. Still, with the way she was staring at Lief, Shada realized that the woman just hadn't found a man as gorgeous to look at as Lief. She, herself was not so taken by the man, something inside her told her that this man was nothing but a self centered prick. Surprised at herself, she bit her tongue to keep herself from saying anything out loud.
"The little princess and the lady. Interesting combination." He smiled, and it was like the heavens opened up. Okay, so he was attractive, she admitted it. But still, even with that, came the voice of reason that lay in her mind. He was still a lecher, and she knew it. "But the problem is... I only have room for one of you." He looked at each girl, and noted the look on the Princess' face.
Shada knew she wasn't going to be invited in; she had learned that from living with her brothers and sisters. And somehow that made her angry. She was tired of being treated like scum. She was tired of being left out of things because of the way she looked. She raised her chin in defiance and hooked him with her deep blue stare.
"Please, Mr. Zombardi..." Rani began.
"Call me Lief." He smiled winsomely at her.
"Please Lief, give us a chance to prove that the two of us belong here!" He laughed.
"I find you amusing, Lady Miranda." He studied his nails for a moment. "But, I will honor this request. We will give you both a test, and the winner will stay here." Relief flooded Shada. Even not knowing what the challenge would be, she was still relieved. At least she was getting a chance to prove herself.
"Very well, the test will begin at dusk tomorrow night. Tara and Josephine will show you to your room. I suggest you rest up." Two women as pale as parchment appeared on either side of them, and grabbed the small bags each girl had brought.
"Come." The exotic looking one said, her Minnan accent thick. Shada and Miranda followed her and her companion out of the room and up the stairs adjacent from it.
The voice in Shada's mind laughed at the women, calling out to her. "How easily I could overtake them! I doubt they would be as fun as Miranda thought. She excites me...." With her face as pink as Miranda's bedchamber walls, she followed them down a long hallway. Thoughts like that came to her every so often, but she never knew why. She knew it was unnatural, but she never really sat and thought about those things....and perhaps she should have. "Soon, all will be revealed to you..." The voice told her. "I promise you that..." She hadn't noticed that they had stopped until she heard the paler woman speak.
"This is your room. To keep you safe, we ask that you don't leave. If you need something, ring the bell and we will bring it to you." She cleared her throat and opened the door. "I'm Tara and this is Josephine. Until after the test we will get you whatever you need. Do you require anything now?"
"Food." Rani told her, looking at Shada, who nodded in agreement.
"And some wine."
"Done. We will bring it to you in a moment." With those last words, the two women were gone.
When they came back, around ten minutes later, Shada and Rani ate in silence, looking at each other every once and a while.
"I wonder what the test will be." Shada said, out loud.
"Me too." Rani replied, getting up to explore their room. Shada watched her for a moment, the scene from earlier still in her mind.
"Want to tell me what's gotten into you?"
"What are you talking about?"
"I'm talking about Lief, and your reaction to him. You were acting like you had never seen a man before or something." Shada crossed her arms over her chest and watched her friend.
"What are you talking about? So I find the man attractive, what's wrong with that? Don't tell me you're jealous or something."
"No. I'm not jealous of Lief." Shada sighed. And she wasn't. She just hated to see her friend fall for the man, only to get hurt, like she knew he would do to her. Instead of arguing, she changed the subject. "Find anything interesting?
"Nah," Rani shook her head, auburn hair swinging.
"Eh, at least there's a bed." Shada shrugged and went over to it. "Well, shall we go to bed? It's really late and we have to get up when everyone else does."
"Yes, probably should." The two girls stripped and climbed into the big bed.
"Good Night, Shada."
" 'Night, Rani."
"Scared?" Nightshade asked, smirking.
"Of course not." Rani said, trembling a little. "You?"
