True to his word, Satan did come for the elder daughter, and with a tearful good-bye the mother allowed...well, not really allowed, her daughter to go and live with her father. She knew it was a terrible thing to do to the twins, separating them like this, but what could she really do? Could she really defy the God she worshiped day in and day out? Apparently not, since she was letting him take Lilith like this.
Tears coursed down her face in long, salty tracks. There was nothing left to do but to teach the remaining twin everything she knew about Magick, so that it would make up for the older sister she didn't have.
"Oh, before I forget.... I took the liberty of giving Nightshade a guardian spirit to protect her, so don't worry, everything will be all right, even if it seems like it won't be." He gave her a crooked smile. "Did you really think I would leave my prodigy alone in this forsaken plane without some sort of protection? Really, am I that much of a monster?" Though he never told Daegonna what kind of protection she had, or how it was going to effect her, the woman was semi-content with his words. At least enough to allow him to take the girl with him.
Tears were shed by both mother and child, the bond of motherhood stretched and broken between them. She felt like she was no longer the girl's mother, if in bond itself, instead of spirit and physical means. And yet, Daegonna knew that the girl would be safe. It wasn't likely that the God would hurt his own children, and that fact alone comforted her. She shushed the younger girl she held on her lap and leaned against the headboard of her bed, closing her eyes against the rush of tears again threatening to spill forth. She had had no choice...
-A few years later-
"Mommy!" Little eight year old Nightshade came running down the hall, shouting.
"What is it, Dear One?" Daegonna asked, when the girl finally found her.
"What's a freak?" The little raven haired girl asked, green eyes turning a calm blue. Daegonna stared at her for a moment, her heart heavy.
"Who told you that?" She demanded.
"Jasper. He said no one likes me because I'm a freak. Am I one?" Her eyes were shining with unshed tears. Her mother looked her over and noted the dirt smudged on her cheeks, the leaves in her hair and the state of the pale purple dress she wore. Her arms were covered in bruises, some healing and some fresh.
"Oh hunnie, Jasper didn't mean those things and you are certainly not a freak." She set aside her spell book and brushed the dust from her apron, kneeling before the little princess. "You are different because the Gods made you so. You must believe you are a special child of the Gods and don't let anyone tell you any different, understand?" The girl nodded, wiping her nose on her sleeve.
"Yes, Mommy." Nightshade said, smiling, her front teeth missing.
"Now, shall we begin your next lesson in Spell working?" Daegonna sighed in relief. Another crisis averted. It was times like this that she wished that Satan had stayed to protect his younger daughter or at least kept the twins together to ease the strain of torments this child would face in her life. She remembered his words to her, about the protective spirit the girl had. But somehow that didn't make her feel any better.
"What is the first thing you need?" The Witch asked her youngest daughter.
"A circle!" The girl answered.
"Very good! Why?"
"To bind or protect us from evil."
"Or to what?" Daegonna tied the smaller apron around her child's waist.
"To seal creatures we've summoned to one spot." Nightshade grinned again.
"Excellent job. You've been studying, I see." She nodded.
In just a few months, the little girl had learned things that had taken her mother years to to achieve. It was obvious that this child was destined for greatness, though she didn't know what as of yet.
