"They're beautiful." Daegonna said, smiling down at the two newborn baby girls that suckled at her breasts. After hours of labor, she had birthed two magnificent girls, who would grow up to be extraordinary young women.
In a flash of fire and brimstone, their father appeared back on the Mortal Plane for the first time in nine long months. He was tall, with black hair and eyes that couldn't seem to make up their mind on which color they wanted to be. She smiled thinly at him but allowed him to come to her side and see his children, his daughters.
"They are, aren't they?" His voice held humor, and yet it was still attractive to her. Plus, he seemed overly proud of himself, which made her grind her teeth behind her smile.
He had been in this form when he had chosen Daegonna and she had been struck by the way he looked then, and now was no exception. What more would he ask of her?
"They will be perfect for what their destinies entail." He laughed, watching her face with some fervor. Her eyes widened as she began to understand his words.
"Plan? You spoke of no plan, Lucifer. What trickery is this have you come to deal me?" She asked, her eyes belying the sadness he could clearly see clouding behind them.
"Silly me." He grinned. "Well, that was the purpose of their birth. Was hoping for a son, but two girls work too." Daegonna was upset, clearly, which upset the girls, who had picked up on it. Both of them began to wail, the breast milk forgotten.
"Don't cry, girls, he didn't mean it." She gave him a withering glare. "Did you?" He held up his hands in defeat.
"Of course not. I love them as they are." The Lord of the Underworld replied. "But I deem to name them. That was our deal." She grit her teeth, but nodded. She would not deny him that. He gave her a pointed grin and nodded sharply. "The eldest is Lilith, and the younger one will be..." He tapped a long, tanned finger against his chin for a moment, mimicking thought. "Nightshade." She looked down at the girls, clearly not liking their names, but saying nothing so she wouldn't upset the God. Just as she did, the younger girl, Nightshade, opened her eyes. Daegonna watched them change colors, not so unlike her father's.
"Nightshade." She said with a smile. Eh, she would get over his choice in names for them. All that mattered was the fact that she now had precious God-children to raise. Nothing made her feel so important. She was thinking about the girls instead of listening to what her God had said to her, but when she realized he was speaking to her, she looked at him just in time to hear his last words.
"I'm taking Lilith with me." He told her, face stoic. "The twins will not know of each other until their eighteenth birthdays, is that clear?" He lifted a dark eyebrow in challenge.
"N-no! You can't separated them! Think of what their lives will be if you do this to them!" She pleaded. He sighed, and she felt his overly hot breath hit her face. He was growing irritated, and she knew it. But she couldn't have her newborn daughters taken away from her. She closed her mouth with a snap, hurt in her blue eyes.
"I have to. You know that. Don't you think I have a plan for this? Are you that much of an unbeliever? Perhaps I made a mistake when I chose you to bear my children." His voice was like venom, and his eyes blackened with barely suppressed rage. She swallowed hard and willed herself to appear meek.
"Will you at least wait until they are weaned and can walk?" She was grasping at straws now, but she had to do what she could to keep the girls together for as long as possible. He contemplated that for a moment before nodding.
"I will wait until then. Be ready for that day. I will not be merciful if you try to trap me." She nodded quickly and with those final words, he exploded into flame and disappeared, leaving no visible trace that anyone was there, except for the dread in Daegonna's heart knowing that she would have to give up one of her children to their father.
She looked down at the sleeping twins, smiling to herself. They really were beautiful. She just hoped they would stay that way...
With their names, and the blessing of their father, the twins' lives had begun.
