I sat in the alley, the night air cool on my fur. "I want a body like that again," I said, as the creature walked past, unaware of the many eyes watching him from the alleyway. It had a short nose, pale, furless skin, hands, and most importantly, thumbs. My audience would call it an Upright. I would call it a human. "Why on Earth would you want that as your body?" asked one of the audience members, a confused look on his face. "You have a snout for smelling, four legs for running, sharp teeth for hunting, and a tail. Uprights have none of these-They cannot run like we do, or hunt like we do. They are soft and weak. Why would you want a body like that?" Asked another. I sighed and closed my eyes for a moment, knowing the dogs would not understand. They would never know the joy of being human, of being able to live, free and happy. To sleep in a warm bed rather than a damp alleyway. To eat a warm meal instead of garbage. Of all the simple things I had taken for granted. But I could not live like that anymore. Why? Because I was a dog.
