Chapter 14:
Surprise...
----------------
It wasn't just the fact that Sira now had to come with them for every job that was pissing Aeydan off. Their next mission? It was scheduled for that night. Sira was bouncing off the walls when they told her. Aeydan was trying not to break something, or someone. Nakavi was watching Sira and chewing on his lip, knuckles white from clenching his fists.
Luckily, Aeydan knew something safe that Sira could probably do with no trouble. Guard duty. She was told that when they got there, she was to stay in to main hallway and no-one was to get through and pass her. If anyone pulled a gun on her, she knew how to avoid it [he hoped] and she knew how to disarm them. She just couldn't let anyone get past her.
"Got that, Sira?" Aeydan repeated for the millionth time as their little black 'vette stopped just outside the building. Their target resided inside, and so did Sira's first assignment. She was hyper as hell and bouncing even as they slipped quietly past the defense system, disarmed by Nakavi. She watched him carefully as he did it, the only time she stayed still.
As they entered, the main hallway was right in front of them. Aeydan and Nakavi motioned for Sira to position herself in the middle of the hall, just before the lobby as they crept forth towards the stairwell. The elevators would do them no good but to announce their arrival.
As Sira sat down innocently in the middle of the hall, Aeydan took the lead, following his sensitive nose up to the fifth floor, where their target was supposed to reside. There was one security guard stationed outside the door where the man presumably was. Well, not for long. Nakavi's skin melted, taking on the scaly pattern of a chameleon, and for good reason. He blended in with the cream paint of the walls around him. The poor security guard didn't even notice him until a hand closed around his neck. But by then it was too late. He made no sound as his neck was snapped, slumping to the floor as Nakavi released him and took on his natural form once more, minus the wings.
Aeydan slid over to the door, footsteps quieter than those of a cat. There were two other agents in their team, aside form Sira, and they had gone back down the stairs to make sure no-one came up in case the alarms went up. Aeydan and Nakavi were alone in the hallway, and after a quick check, Aeydan held up three fingers. Two. One.
The door flew open and Nakavi attacked, followed instantly by Aeydan. Those inside the room were caught entirely off guard, including seven guards.
Aeydan and Nakavi had struck gold. Not only was their target here, there were several other high-ranking government jackoffs in the room. Since no witnesses were allowed to be left alive during missions, everyone in the room was to die, starting with the security guards. A bullet grazed Aeydan's shoulder as he moved towards one of the guards, but he shrugged it off, relying on a hundred years' worth of training to keep himself going as if nothing had happened. He tore out the guard's throat and took his pistol, spraying a few rounds at the others as Nakavi took out two of them.
Guards done, Gov't jackoffs left.
Aeydan took aim and fired at all six of them. His excellent aim took them out, and Nakavi examined the bodies with a grin. "Not much fun, were they?"
This was why they didn't want Sira to be an assassin. After long enough, they got so used to it that, in a way, the killing had become fun to them. A girl as young as Sira didn't need to be exposed to that, no matter how mature she was for her age. She didn't need to learn to kill, or make a living off of it. Ever.
Aeydan shook his head and proceeded to walk out the room, followed by Nakavi, who had picked up a new firearm for himself off one of the security guys. He hummed merrily as they walked down the stairs, but stopped when they got back to the ground floor.
"D'you smell that?" he asked softly.
Aeydan nodded, all senses on alert. "Blood."
"Sira," both breathed, before leaping out into the hallway, Nakavi aiming his gun.
He dropped it a moment later, staring at the sight ahead of him. Four bodies lay around Sira in a circle, and she was sitting on the floor with an innocent smile. Bruises were forming on her arms, and she kept licking up blood from a split lip. "Hey, guys," she said calmly, scratching her arm nervously. Two of the bodies were their teammates.
Aeydan could tell with his sensitive hearing that none of the four were dead, just unconscious. Their hearts were beating strongly. He gave Sira a blank stare, trying to believe what his eyes were telling him. She had taken out the security AND two of the older soldiers? That was hard to believe, but here lay the proof, right in front of him. It would have been more amazing if she had done it without a scratch, but unfortunately, that wasn't the case. She smelled like blood, which meant that he would have to check her over as soon as possible.
"What happened here?" he asked, trying his best to keep his voice calm.
Sira gave him a confused look, then lowering her gaze to stare at her hands. "You said not to let anyone by."
Aeydan cursed; Nakavi laughed; Sira glanced fearfully up at them.
He really should have instructed her more clearly.
