It turned out that the battle was nothing more than a skirmish, and by the time they had gotten there, the fighting was over, the Mortals having been mowed down like grass. Which was all well and good, except now she, Rayflo, Pandora and one other squad had to occupy the city and wait for the next fight. Of all the people to get stuck with, it had to be him, didn't it? The Fates must have hated her that night. For not only did she had to station with him, she also had the shame of having to listen to him try to goad her into doing what she had said she was going to do to him. She had tried to ignore him for over six hours, but her patience was wearing thin.
"My squad will take first round. We would like to hunt while we are out, if that is all right." Pandora looked at Rayflo, he being the highest ranking officer there.
"Tell Micheal I said he and his are to go with you before you go." Rayflo said, giving her his best grin. Shada's palm itched to slap the smile from his face but she sat there, impassive, watching her daughter leave. As soon as she did, he turned to look at her again.
"Before you hit me because I was hitting on your daughter again..." Her head snapped up.
"You know?"
"Of course I know. You two look too much alike to be sisters, and not close enough to be twins. I put two and two together." He replied, shaking his head. "Besides, I think I got it when you hit me the first time. A sister wouldn't hit a man for talking to his sister like I did."
"Not true... perhaps I am a very protective sister." She stuck her chin out in defiance.
"I would give you the benefit of the doubt on that." He grinned. "So when are you going to do what you told me you were going to do?"
"Rayflo, I told you. I'm not going to do that. I have morals about me. And just because I'm a Vampiir, doesn't mean you can coax the wicked out of me. Besides, I wouldn't try, if I were you, it wouldn't end well, trust me. I don't fight fair."
"One of these days you are going to concede to me. I guarantee it."
"Keep dreaming, lover boy. I made differently than the females your used to." He gave her a strange look and his eyes dipped to her lap. She slapped his face.
"Not that you pervert! I meant my self-control! Gods, are you always this... this..." Her face grew red and her eyes darkened.
"This what?"
"DISGUSTING?!" He gave her a grin.
"Always." She gave an exasperated sigh and lay down on her back.
"Men!"
"Ah... women." She punched his leg this time; he laughed and rubbed the spot, keeping watch on the door.
When the squads came back, Shada noticed that Pandora wasn't with hers, and that a large part of them were missing. The one who were left looked like something had gotten them. She surged to her feet, eyes wide with worry.
"Where is your squad leader?" She asked one of Dora's men. Her voice was calm and in command, which belied the look of dread in her eyes.
"We were attacked, Ma'am. Friendlies. Came out of nowhere while our backs were turned. Private De Embrell was a part of...." Shada didn't stay to hear his last words; she was off like a shot into the surrounding woods, following Pandora's Aura trail. She head footsteps behind her, but she was too stricken to stop. She wouldn't believe it unless she saw it. She would never believe Pandora was dead unless she saw for.... not far from where she was standing, the trail went cold. She rushed over to it, ripping the bush out of her way to get to... the body was almost completely ash when she saw it, which mean another Vampiir had done this to her. Only a Vampiir, not a Vampire, and not any other Sub Race of Vampire, but a Vampiir, one of their own Kind had done this.
She was going to pass out, she could tell, the heaviness in her body was getting worse and she couldn't take it. Pandora was dead. Pandora was dead.... her only child was dead. She couldn't believe it. Blood tears fell from her eyes, making deep holes in the ash pile before her. She touched it and it disintegrated, blowing away in the wind. Breathing heavily, she looked around, eyes wild but blacker than the deepest onyx stone.
"Are you...." She waved him away, needing this time for herself. He tried to touch her, which only made her bare her fangs at him and hiss.
"Get away from me!" She screamed at him. "She's dead, why can't you just leave me alone to grieve for her?" She was on her hands and knees, her eyes squeezed shut. This wasn't happening, she was going to open her eyes and this was all going to be a dream. This wasn't happening.... She caught the scent of something unfamiliar in the distance but when she looked up, there was nothing there.
Her scream of pain and loss echoed for miles.
She didn't return to the camp for a day, and in that time she had buried her daughter, and said her good byes. It had hurt, and she had been changed when she returned to camp. Rayflo had tried to joke with her, but she had looked at him, and he had immediately stopped talking to her. She was devoid of feelings now, her baby was dead, and she had been murdered by one of her own Kind. By the time Shada had gotten there, the trail was all but gone, other wise she would have hunted the son of a bitch down and made that person pay for what they had done to her.
Instead, she had sat next to Pandora's ashes, protecting them from the wind until she was able to get up and bury them. And with that done, she had returned, lest she be labeled a deserter.
When their band had arrived back at the main camp, she had sat emotionlessly through the announcements, and vaguely heard that they were going home, that peace had finally been established. But instead of being happy about it, she turned and went to her tent to lie down, which she did and stare at the ceiling, thinking about what she would do now that things were over. She thought about staying here, and making a new life for herself, but without Pandora there, it just wasn't the same. Besides, she still had the task of going to tell Azazel that Pandora had been slain, she at least owed him that much, if nothing else.
She barely drank any blood that night, she just stared down at the table and the claw marks someone had made. Rayflo elbowed her, which made her look up and glare at him.
"What?"
"I asked you a question." He said lightly.
"Oh... did you? What was it?"
"I asked you where you would go from here. I mean I know you are from a different country, I can tell by listening to you talk and by the way you look. So tell me, Miss De Embrell, were are you going from here?" She looked at him before sighing. And for once, she realized, he was not making some disgusting joke.
"Well, I have to go home and tell my ex that his daughter was killed in a war he didn't know we had joined and then after that, if I'm still alive, I will probably come back here for a while." She said.
"Brutal." He grimaced. "Sounds like you know what you're doing. Must be nice."
"Nice? What's nice about it? I could die, Rayflo."
"You know I didn't mean that like that, Shada." She nodded and licked her lips.
"Aye... I'm sorry for snapping at you. I just...."
"I understand." She smiled thinly.
"Thanks."
She drank the rest of her blood before leaving the mess tent, only to go back to her own tent, for the last time.
