Chapter Seven:
Habitat
---------------------
"You're awake."
The words came from her right and Sira sprang up with a soft growl. She looked at the owner of the voice with wide blue eyes. He had deep, slate grey hues and dark hair; black hair. Those eyes bored into her own turquoise ones with an intensity that made her flinch involuntarily. When he spoke she could see the tips of long fangs fangs brushing against his lower lip, remarkably white against his red lips.
"Where am I?" she softly asked him, narrowing her eyes. She could tell he was a Vampyr but that was about it. She didn't know him, and so she didn't trust him; wouldn't trust him.
He chuckled and moved from the corner of the room, where he had been watching her. His instructions had been to inform the Head the moment the child woke up, but he could prolong that for awhile. He could do no wrong in the eyes of his comrades, and as such he could get away with delaying an order he had been given.
Slowly, he walked over to the bed the girl lay on. Hospital beds were rather annoying, and gave one an impression that they were about to have any number of odd medical procedures inflicted upon them. The girl smelled like one of the forest dwelling species, and obviously, a warm, yet somehow unfeeling bed wasn't going to make her more comfortable. It sure as hell was going to create some amusement for him, however.
"I can't tell you where you are... Kind of secret, sorry." He found it interesting to note how her eyes darkened a few shades when he refused to tell her where she was. It was true that it was a company secret and he couldn't tell her, but her reaction piqued his curiosity.
Sira shook her head slightly, thinking before asking a new question. "Fine, then why am I here?"
"Well, to put it simply, I saved you." She looked to be about eight years of age to his eyes, but with the nature of the forest folk, she could be older, or younger.
Sira deliberated on this for a long moment. He saved her? The last thing she remembered was walking, she had borrowed energy from an old oak tree... She was feeling so weak, and so hungry... The ground rose up to meet her, and everything went black... She shook her head once more with a faint growl. "Thanks, but I didn't need your help." she muttered softly, her pride welling up inside of her.
The Vampyr's eyebrow raised slightly in disbelief. Didn't need help? She would have died had he not given her his blood and taken her here, and she claimed not to need his help? Arrogant little thing, wasn't she?
He met her gaze and found that those turquoise eyes had deepened once more in colour. Interesting. "I see," he answered, sitting upon the edge of the bed. She shifted away from him with a quiet growl, scratching at her arm. "So, what's your name?"
The question caught her off guard, considering what she had just told him. And should she trust him with her name? Well, he can't know much with my first name alone... she thought, answering with a quiet, "Sira."
"Sira, eh? Name's Aeydan." the male told her, steely gaze on her own. She ignored that, looking around. There wasn't much in the room, just the bed and a few sinister-looking medical appliances. They weren't truly sinister, but they would--
His thoughts were interrupted as the door opened. He turned to look and then nodded to his boss. "Head," he said respectfully.
"How long's she been awake?" the balding man in front of him demanded. His hair was a dark, unflattering grey, as was his thin mustache. He was several pounds overweight, but a man like him didn't have to worry about that when he had half a thousand people who would do almost anything he asked.
Almost.
"Only a few minutes, sir. And may I just add that my attempt at earning her trust was probably foiled by your interruption?"
The Head ignored him, peering around him at the young girl behind Aeydan. She was small, red-haired and young. Very young. She also wasn't human, or Aeydan wouldn't have brought her back here. He had very little tolerance for humans and their greed, the exception seeming to be the Head himself. Or so he hoped.
"That her?"
"Well, no shit, Sherlock. I'm the only girl in the room, so obviously, I am 'her.'"
That took both Aeydan and the Head aback. Aeydan because she hadn't said any more than seven words in a sentence since she woke. The Head had never been spoken so disrespectfully to. However, this was a young child, and as such she probably hadn't been taught manners yet. She also didn't know who she was speaking to, and the Head narrowed his eyes with the intention of teaching her those manners.
It clear within moments that Aeydan was biting his lower lip to keep from chuckling, as blood began trickling down his chin. He paused and wiped his chin clean, the bite mark in his lip healing. The scent of his blood reached Sira's nose and she blinked several times. It smelled amazing, sweet and intoxicating... She sniffed delicately at the air for a moment, attracting even more attention from the two men than she already had.
"What's wrong with her?" the Head asked, unsure what the little inhuman child was doing.
"Er, sorry, Sira. That's a temporary downside to ingesting Vampyr blood."
"Ingesting Vampyr blood? You mean eating it?! What the hell did you do to me?!" she squeaked in surprise. If it was possible to startle the Head and Vampyr any more, she would have right that moment. She had been so calm until the Head came in; what had changed since?
"Yes," an exasperated Aeydan replied, "You were mostly dead when I found you, so I gave you some of my blood so you would survive long enough for me to get you here.
"Oh. Well, thanks. Anyway, when can I get out of here? I'm kinda trying to get away from... Things."
The Head took this opportunity to speak. The child's behaviour was perplexing, but for now he would put up with it. "When you're fully healed, we'll give you something to erm, knock you out and release you back into your, erm, habitat."
Both Aeydan and Sira glared at him. Habitat?! Like some poor wounded animal being released into it's habitat by the benevolent fatass? Sira's eyes promptly turned a stark scarlet, gaze boring into the Head's. Aeydan, noticing the colour of her irises and her pupils as well, backed away from the head. Yes, it was his duty to protect his boss, but he wasn't getting in the way of something that angry until he knew what it was capable of. Even a small girl who was recovering from near starvation. However, he did pause to reconsider the fact that she seemed to like him at least.
"Release me back into my HABITAT?! What do you think I am, some sort of animal? Just because I'm not a weak, slow-witted human like you? Do you think you're... better than I am, hm?"
Her voice had gone from a near scream to a deadly soft whisper by those last few words, her ears becoming larger and migrating towards the top of her skull. Her bared teeth were becoming sharper, her canines lengthening into fangs almost as long as Aeydan's own. She moved slowly off of the bed, and it was clear that a tail was also growing, long and black and lashing like that of a furious cat.
She took a single deep breath and whispered, "Do you?"
